The Spiderwick Chronicals
by Toni DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

I didn't believe in faeries when I was a kid, but I had a friend who did.  She would  take us kids for walks to see fairy castles (old stumps, sometimes with mushroom umbrellas to shade the fairies) or cracks in rocks where gnomes live. The Spiderwick Chronicles bring this world to life again.  The three Grace children move with their mother to the old Spiderwick estate after their parents divorce.  Almost immediately very strange things start happening. They meet a temperamental brownie, find an old handwritten book full of information about faeries, and this is only the beginning, as they enter a world of magic and danger.  This is a five volume series of small hardcover books filled with pen and ink drawings in a format similar to A Series of Unfortunate Events, recommended for ages 7 and up, including adults who want to rediscover the magic of childhood.
