A LOFT OF BOOKS

The Poetry of Nyingje Sheltso

Nyingje Sheltso is a reclusive Buddhist poet who lives in a tree house somewhere near Beeton with her faithfull companion from the Burmese mountains, Har Li Kwin.  On the rare times she has appeared in public with the revered and controversial Canadian poet, Susan Musgrave, she has been followed by a flock of vultures.

Floor Birds

All humans cry on the same wavelength,
the professor from Alpha Centauri said.
But what do they cry?
Stop the world, I want to get off?
Please release me, let me go?
We may never know, looking down on them
from up here, circling, waiting.

"They’re really buzzards," said the poet,
who recognized us.
"Floor birds from another dimension,
maimed by too much warp speed.
That’s why they’re on the floor.
The floor of their universe, which is of course,
the sky in ours."

How did she know, we wondered.
But poets are vultures too,
feeding on the refuse of their lives,
translating it into beauty,
or just more lies.
